- Bio
Paul Horiuchi was a Seattle painter and collagist. He was born in Oishi, Japan, and studied art from an early age. He immigrated to the United States in his early teens and worked on the railroad in Wyoming. Horiuchi moved to Seattle in 1946 where he eventually switched his focus from painting to collage, and came to be associated with the "Northwest School" of artists. He is especially known for his powerful collages that combine Abstract Expressionist influences with those of his Japanese heritage.
Horiuchi is best known for his glass mosaic backdrop to the Seattle Center's Mural Amphitheater, and his work is in numerous public and private collections including the Seattle Art Museum, Portland Art Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, University of Puget Sound, and the Museum of Northwest Art, La Conner, Washington.
