- Bio
Maude Kerns's career as an artist and educator was firmly rooted in the Northwest, but her work received both national and international attention. Her studies with Arthur Wesley Dow, Alexander Archipenko, and Hans Hofmann developed her lasting interests in shape, composition and color relationships.
Kerns was born in Portland and moved to Eugene in 1884. She studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute, San Francisco (later the California School of Fine Arts) and at Columbia University in New York. In 1921, she returned to Eugene to teach at the University of Oregon, where she also helped organize the Eugene Art Center (renamed the Maude I. Kerns Center) for the purpose of promoting contemporary art in the region.
