- Bio
Maeda Masao was born in Hakodate, Hokkaido, and moved to Tokyo in 1924, just as the city was recovering from the earthquake. His early work included both Western-style painting and woodblock printing, but after he became a student of Hiratsuka Un'ichi during the 1930s, he concentrated on prints and became known for his powerfully chiseled landscapes.
