- Bio
Ichikawa Danjūrō is a stage name, passed down for several generations among actors in the Ichikawa family. Normally reserved for the actor most skilled in dramatic male roles that required agility and strength, the Danjūrō name was also one earned at the peak of one's career.
A leading actor during the second half of the 19th century, Danjūrō IX was the fifth son of Ichikawa Danjūrō VII and a direct descendant of the first to hold the name Ichikawa Danjūrō. He had six brothers in Kabuki: Danjūrō VIII, Ebizō VII, Ebizō VIII, Ichikawa Komazō VI, Ichikawa Saruzō I, and Ichikawa Kōzō. He was adopted by Kawarazaki Gonnosuke VI, and was the father-in-law of Ichikawa Danjūrō X.
