- Located above River Wensum; sacked by Danes in 1004; center of wool trade in Middle Ages; suffered from Black Death in 1348; was one of country's largest cities in 17th-19th cen.; site of large shoe industry; noted for 11th-cen. Norwich Cathedral, founded in 1096 by the first bishop of Norwich. There is also a Norman castle here.
