- Bio
James McGarrell was an artist-in-residence at Reed College from 1956-1959 and served on the faculty at Indiana University. A Fulbright fellowship in 1955 allowed him to study in Stuttgart. Art News of December 1955 called him a "pictorial dramatist of decay and physical corruption ... a painter trying to come to grips with imagery stated in twentieth century terms." McGarrell says there are no symbols in his painting, only visual metaphors. He did contemporary, representational painting that did not "hand everything over to the viewer." He had many one person shows in California, New York, Illinois, and Europe. Later in his career he joined the faculty at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
