- Bio
Tanaka Masaaki is among the best known Japanese print artists working today. Like many of his generation, he studied oil painting in college, as printmaking was not considered sufficiently academic. He learned copperplate, silkscreen, and other printmaking techniques from older artists and by experimenting on his own.
Tanaka first explored the theme of festivals in a series for a solo exhibition in 1973, and he has returned to the subject frequently since then. Tanaka’s work is distinguished by the purity and intensity of his colors and by his use of unusual perspectives that place the viewer in the midst of a crowd.
