- Bio
Born in Hunan province on the mainland, Hu moved to Taiwan in 1949, where he studied privately with well-known masters and quickly established a reputation as a promising artist. Seeking to broaden his horizons, he came to the United States in 1973 to study oil painting at the Art Students League of New York. Back in Taiwan, he served as the director of the Taiwan Academy of Chinese Painting, a prestigious post that put him at the center of the local art world. Hu returned for a lengthy stay in New York City in the 1980s and 1990s. Hu's fluency in Western culture has made him a spokesperson for Taiwan's distinctive take on modern Chinese painting.
