- Bio
Watanabe Sadao is known as one of the leading artists of the 'Sōsaku hanga' (Creative Print) movement of the mid-20th century in Japan. Deeply influenced by Yanagi Sôetsu (1889-1961) and his theories on the purity of folk art traditions, Watanabe was inspired to study Bingata, a traditional Okinawan technique for stencil printing textiles, with Serizawa Keisuke (1895-1984). Like his fellow pupil Mori Yoshitoshi (1898-1992), he then adapted the stencil process to print making. A devout Christian, Watanabe focused on Biblical themes throughout his career.
