- Bio
Zao was born in Beijing and as a young man studied avant-garde Chinese painting at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. In 1948, he moved to Paris, where he quickly became friends with such luminaries as Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso. Zao developed a distinctive style that synthesized Abstract Expressionism and elements of traditional Chinese ink painting and calligraphy. He is primarily known as a painter, but he made prints as well.
